In April of this year (2010), I exhibited some work at UnionDocs in Brooklyn, New York. I called the work ‘For One, For All’. It comprised of two Super 8mm projections of film which I shot on location in New Hampshire & Connecticut during the 2008 Presidential Elections in the USA. The films are to this day unedited, and I have shown them only twice. I’m thinking about editing them…
As part of ‘For One, For All’ I presented a diary from 2009 which I had hardly used. I appropriated the diary as a sketchbook, or thought-book (see images above - click on the images twice to see them more clearly… I need to work on my website). This is a way for me to consider more deeply my understanding of democracy, just by trying out my thoughts in some sentences and simple drawings, by cutting and pasting images and quotes, by writing out certain excerpts from theorists like Jaques Ranciere, Margaret Donaldson, Hannah Arendt and Chantal Mouffe, as well as snippets from conversations I overheard while in the USA in 2008, or there after. So really this is ongoing… I just haven’t been dealing directly with this stuff in a while… but it seems more relevant than ever now. More than now than ever.
