The Black Mariah presents
DIFFERENCE ENGINE: Manifestation II
Jamming is a form of error-detection
Difference Engine draws together the intermingling and ongoing explorations of artists Mark Cullen, Gillian Lawler, Wendy Judge, Jessica Foley & Gordon Cheung.
Influenced by systems & technologies of time, space & economy, each artist’s work voices a subjective philosophy, informed by personal experience, observation & interest, forking through the present into the future & the past, challenging introverted assumptions of nostalgia, utopia & dystopia, and promoting a retro-sensitivity that aims to engage it’s audience in probing actual & imagined experience; cause & effect; scientific & social experiment and discovery and their factual, fictive or hypothetical representations over time.
Presenting the second episode in an emerging series of exhibitions, DIFFERENCE ENGINE: Manifestation II opens on June 9th at 7.30pm and runs until it’s Closing Day Special on Saturday June 26th in a Classic Double Bill Matinee featuring The Bloody Ends vs. Kronos.
DIFFERENCE ENGINE: Manifestation II is an installation of disparate & individual works that undeniably riff off each other, opening up a space wherein the audience can begin to generate connections and meanings that are unique to themselves, engaging in a kind of immersive & active storytelling… becoming players, or tourists within the zone of exhibition, in an encounter with the limits of their own imagination.

rough sketch for exhibition at UnionDocs, Brooklyn, NYC.
The days are flying by - Four members (Aine Ivers, Susan Thomson, myself & Jessamyn Fiore) of The Writing Workshop are about to embark on an adventure, exhibiting work in Williamsberg, Brooklyn, New York City. The space has been nailed down by Jessamyn for us, UnionDocs it’s called, and an exciting looking spot it is too. Very much looking forward to meeting some people there & getting the opportunity to share our work & get feedback. A big thanks to Culture Ireland & thisisnotashop for supporting this project - The Writing Workshop in New York City!
The sketch above is a rough guesstimate at this moment in time of how I might present my film/audio installation - it will run for 2 hours & I’ll be active for those hours loading & rewinding the films as they play - it will be quite trance like I hope… those projectors make a hell of a lot of noise. For one, For all the work is tentatively called - it’s a kind of a strained attempt to generate in myself some kind of understanding of democracy in relation to personal & private experiences… I think…
We’ll be running a couple of Workshops at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Centre, and the exhibition/events at UnionDocs will take place from Thursday 8th April to Saturday 10th April. If anyone is heading stateside please do come & check out the work & the workshops.

A rather fuzzy snapshot of my work in the vitrine at P.S.1 MOMA - I'll post better quality images shortly.

For the month of February I’ll be exhibiting a piece of work Allegory for Occupation, alongside fellow members of The Writing Workshop Aine Ivers, Susan Thomson and Jessamyn Fiore at P.S.1 MOMA, supported by ARTBOOK, Culture Ireland & thisisnotashop.
Each of the works have been created for specific installation into the Vitrines in the P.S.1 Cafe - The show is called Glass I and presents four individual artists/writers works, but also reveals how our work has become interconnected or linked through the sharing of our thoughts & processes through The Writing Workshop.

Difference Engine draws together the intermingling explorations of artists Mark Cullen, Gillian Lawler, Wendy Judge, Jessica Foley & Gordon Cheung. Influenced by the systems & technologies of time, space & generation, each artist’s work pulls on philosophical trajectories forking into the future & the past, challenging introverted assumptions of nostalgia, and promoting a retro-sensitivity that will engage it’s audience in questions probing the actual & the imagined; cause & effect; scientific pursuits of discovery & their factual, fictive or hypothetical representations, through history & into the future, wherever that might be.
As opposed to it’s 19th century namesake*, Difference Engine will push beyond the logic of finite differences, allowing for a movement of images (visual/sonic/verbal), while demonstrating an awareness that ‘jamming is a form of error-detection’.
NB: MANIFESTATION2 takes place at The Black Mariah in Cork City, March 2010. Watch this space…
